Seamus Carey, Ph.D., became Transylvania University’s 26th president on July 1, 2014, taking the helm at the 16th-oldest college in the U.S. Since its founding in 1780 as the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania has been pioneering new frontiers in higher education.
During the next interactive Commerce Lexington Inc. Good Morning Bluegrass event presented by Fifth Third Bank on Tuesday, October 7, from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Lexington, Dr. Carey will talk about his decision to take the Transy president’s job and move his family to Lexington, as well as the delicate balance between embracing Transy’s strong tradition and positioning it for the future.
Engagement with the Lexington community in search of ways to enhance students’ academic experiences through internships and mentoring is high on the new president’s goals during his first 100 days on campus. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Before coming to Transylvania, Dr. Seamus Carey was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. He has held numerous leadership positions during his academic career, including the chairmanship of the Philosophy Department at Manhattan College. At Manhattan, he also served on the faculty senate, as chair of the School of Arts curriculum committee, and as director of the university’s Center for Professional Ethics. The author of numerous articles and books, his work focuses on the intersection of philosophy, parenting, and family life. His areas of philosophical interest include 20th Century continental philosophy, ethics, and environmental philosophy.
